Review of Going Home Again

What a sweet, lovely romance!

Who hasn’t had a sweet high school crush? I know I have. And this book allowed me to revisit this love. Le sigh.

Sometimes  I can’t help but wonder the question What if?

Well, Alyssa (who had a crush) is thrown into a spiral of emotions when her heartthrob Michael returns to their hometown and then confronted with all the feels. Michael is going through a separation, which makes all of the feelings not always so easy to deal with.

I loved this book and I love how this story is told in alternating perspectives. Both characters were written realistically– which is so important. I hate when I read a book and the characters sound flat or fake. NOT THE CASE HERE. Both Alyssa and Michael are real people, with real emotions, and a beautiful story to tell.

I laughed, I cried, and I enjoyed the schmexy times.

Amazing job Abby! The only complaint I have is that I want more!! (*hint hint)

Lovely and Lethal Blog Tour: Elegantly Wasted

Elegantly Wasted Book Cover

Elegantly Wasted book blurb:

On the eve of her high school graduation, proper socialite Francesca “Frankie” Fairholm rebelled against her elitist and controlling family to pursue the dark lifestyle of a contract killer for the enigmatic Osiris Corporation. Years later, with her training complete, she believes she’s doomed to the life of a sociopathic lone gun until a botched hit brings two unlikely allies, her cousins Addison and Katharine.

Using Katharine’s etiquette school, Elegance, Inc., as a front, the trio weave through Frankie’s dark underworld, carrying out contracts, drinking too much wine, and trying not to get each other killed.

Trouble follows the team home when the death of the cruel Fairholm matriarch reveals more than they ever wanted to know about their family. As the funeral preparations play out, the trio begin to realize there is much more to their employer than meets the eye and their family connections run deeper than they ever imagined.

Favorite Quote from the book

“You know those long awkward silences that you get  when talking with people for the first time? I love those. Most people hate them, but to me they were like welcomed sighs of relief. Above that, I think I loved how awkward it made people feel. I’d sit there and smile, watching their eyes shift while their idiot brains searched for something to say.”

I chose this quote because it’s so Frankie. She’s snarky, she’s got this hilarious personality, and she’s the black sheep that you can’t help root for. This novel was like a breath of fresh air because I really couldn’t compare it to any other new adult read out there. I love the story line, I love the concept, and I absolutely love Frankie and her sarcastic personality. C. Elizabeth Vescio writes real characters and such an engaging, action packed story you can’t put down!

About C. Elizabeth Vescio:

Jack of all trades and stereotypical black sheep, Cara has been writing somewhat dark and morbid since that teen angst hit c_vescio_pic_smallsomewhere in the early 90’s- probably because her dad was a mortician. After pursuing a degree in English, she changed gears to photography and design in 2006… although she kept penning stories for fun while reading the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Oscar Wilde and Hemingway (whom she adores even though he was a huge douche canoe). In 2009, her life shifted considerably and she found herself writing Elegantly Wasted- helping her sort out a bunch of stupid feelings and other lame stuff.

She enjoys cynical debates, cupcakes, making her mother-in-law sew her aprons that she never wears, zombies, the Fifth Element and Tomb Raider. She gathers her life inspirations from Neil Gaiman, Julia Child and Paul Simon. When she isn’t out photographing her next project, she’s studying color, concept and design or writing stuff down in hopes it makes sense one day… or she’s on Pinterest.

Cara lives in Las Vegas with her husband, John and their three genetically altered dogs all of which have personal vendettas for the guy who cleans the pool.

This Girl

This Girl

by Colleen Hoover

Goodreads blurb: There are two sides to every love story. Now hear Will’s.

Colleen Hoover’s New York Times bestselling Slammed series has brought countless readers to their knees with a whirlwind of love, passion, and heartache. Layken and Will’s love has managed to withstand the toughest of circumstances and the young lovers, now married, are beginning to feel safe and secure in their union. Still, he can’t resist his wife’s pleas and so he begins to untangle his side of the story, revealing for the first time his most intimate feelings and thoughts, retelling both the good and bad moments, and sharing a few shocking confessions of his own from the time when they first met.

In This Girl, Will tells the story of their complicated relationship from his point of view. Their future rests on how well they deal with the past in this final installment of the beloved Slammed series.

18 Mar

I’m so excited to reveal Ella Taylor, the main character and modern day Cinderella in my new novella Unmasking Ella. My co-author Krista Newport posted something on her blog about Ella earlier this month. Thankfully, Ella agreed to stop by my blog too so that we could find out a little bit more about the girl in in the mask!

I’d have to say the ability to read minds. There are so many things I wish I could hear.

Who is your secret crush?

If I told you it wouldn’t be a secret now would it?

Unmasking Ella: Exclusive Excerpt!

18 Mar

Happy St. Patty’s Day!

I hope you’re all spending it drinking something delicious and eating Corned Beef and Cabbage! Because it’s the Month of Shamrocks, Krista and I thought we’d give you something extra special… an excerpt from our premiere novella Unmasking Ella. In case you haven’t heard yet, our debut novella is a modern retelling of one of our favorite fairy tales: Cinderella. Below is the excerpt:

“Bitch” scrawled messily across my arm was the first thing my eyes focused on. My head was pounding. My eyelids weighed a thousand pounds. I needed water right away. I struggled into a sitting position; my head was spinning and it was hard to keep upright. Wait. Bitch wasn’t the only thing written on me. My arms were covered in writing and words that were quick to bring tears to my eyes. Slut, whore, idiot, skank, were among the many.

Don’t forget to add it to Goodreads so you can be alerted when it’s released or just to read the whole synopsis!

There it is folks! The first paragraph. What do you think?

Summary from Goodreads:

“I like you.” His voice is low and soft, which I don’t deserve. I look away, down the rutted parking lot.

“Don’t…waste those words on me.”

He touches my cheek. “You just need someone to show you.”

“No.” I ease back again. “I don’t. So please, Torrin, stop trying to swoop in and save me. I don’t need saving.”

College freshman Quinn Montgomery will do anything to avoid the mistake her sister made—killing herself over a boy. But when she is forced into nude modeling at a local college to support her family after a bankruptcy, she begins to crack, just enough to let Torrin, the university’s top varsity oarsman, see that the real Quinn is not as feisty and unapproachable as she wants everyone to think. But letting someone in comes at a steep cost and, it turns out, Torrin is connected to Quinn’s family in more ways than she could ever imagine.

Unmasking Ella: Masked Moodboard of Sexy

4 Mar

When I was little, my aunt started a tradition. Celebrate St. Patty’s day in a big way. We’d wake up to green milk, green eggs, green shamrocks mysteriously painted on our arms, and more.

In fact, the celebration has a tradition of expanding even longer than just the 17th. Sometimes it goes for a week or more! So, in honor of my heritage (Irish), my favorite holiday St. Patty’s Day, and the announcement of my new novella Unmasking Ella (Secret Cinderella #1), my best friend and co-author Krista Newport and I will be celebrating The Month of Shamrocks!

I’ll be posting odes to hot Irish men, snippets from books I love, and of course, sneak peaks into Unmasking Ella (who also happens to contain a hot Irishman).

Today brings you a Masked Moodboard of Sexy, to give you a feel for the novel.

Book News: Unmasking Ella

1 Mar

I have BIG news, guys!

My talented best friend Krista Newport and I often talk about writing. We bounce ideas back and forth, talk about book boyfriends, and give book recommendations.  You know, the normal stuff BFFLs discuss. And one day we got to talking about something that I fell in love with right off the bat!

So we co-wrote it!

Behold, our New Adult, fairy tale project titled Unmaking Ella, #1 in the Secret Cinderella series!

UnmaskingElla

Ella Taylor has been longing for freedom since the fateful day her father died, leaving her with Coco, the step-bitch from the West, and Brooke, the wickedest of wicked stepsisters. There’s little time for a love life when Ella has to earn her keep while paying her way through college. That doesn’t stop her from swooning over Killian Ward, Mr. Gorgeous, Irish, and very off-limits. If only Brooke didn’t already have her cat claws sunk into him.

With Killian off limits, Ella is sure that all she can do is dream, until the opportunity of a lifetime arises. If she can’t have Killian in real life, maybe she can have him for three days of Midsummer, the annual Greek campus tradition. Three days of parties. Three days in masks. Will Ella find her secret Cinderella ending? Or in the real world, does the evil stepsister always win?
